I work as a Ships Officer on the Stena Adventurer which operates between Holyhead and Dublin. This January I decided to take seriously learning Welsh. My wife describes herself as rusty A Level standard and we've chosen welsh medium education for our children. I bought the Rosetta Stone cd years ago and It sat in a box in the spare room gathering dust. So I dug it out and started taking it to work with me and tried to do a half an hour lesson each day. I found it really usefull for learning the names of things, see a picture of something and I pick up instantly what it is. But I found it very difficult to pick up the conversational aspect.
Fortunately over half the crew on the Adventurer are Welsh speakers and everyone has been really helpful in teaching me little things each day. Then I found say something in welsh and was able to download it onto my Iphone, everywhere I go I have the lessons with me and I can snatch a quick 10 minutes hear and there and everywhere. As you can imagine this has helped me come on in leaps and bounds.
My Sailors do however take a special pleasure in teaching me the rude words. I chatted with Aran on the Gwlad Rugby forum about this and thought you all might appreciate how you can learn welsh in the strangest of places thanks to this course.
