The new year augurs well for Welsh

While we, along with a million or so other people, were waiting in the Botanical Gardens on the shores of Port Jackson for the Sydney NYE fireworks to begin, I noticed a lady sitting right next to us wearing a bright red t-shirt , on which the word Cymru was very clearly visible. Naturally, I could not resist and asked her if she was from Wales. No, but her cousin with her was on a visit with her teenage daughter. When I asked if they spoke Welsh (in Welsh), the daughter answered that she did, but not her mother (and jokingly called her a traitor), and that they lived in Abertawe. We chatted a bit more, and I would never have guessed that I would be starting the new year with a conversation in Welsh!
