Plas Coch, Y Bala

Postby RedGreenInBlue » Wed Jul 11, 2012 1:06 pm

I feel a bit of a fraud posting here, as I don't really feel much nervousness anymore, just a tremendous urge to speak Welsh at any opportunity, appropriate or not  Anyway, the weekend before last we were camping near Llanberis with nephew and niece, and on our meandering way home we stopped off in Y Bala for lunch.

I've found that pubs and restaurants even in ardaloedd Cymraeg often don't provide much of an opportunity to speak Welsh, because of the tendency to employ temp staff from far afield, even if the owner is local. So I was pleased to find that I'd guessed correctly this time with the Plas Coch in the town centre (which is easy to spot: the name gives it away :D )

Every single member of staff I saw was a Welsh speaker, and although we were the first people into the pub, within half an hour the place was full, and all the other diners were Welsh speaking too (including a good number of families with young children). Admittedly the food was only passable, but that's often the case with Sunday roasts. They had some good guest beers including Cwrw Llŷn, and most importantly for me, plenty of opportunity to use my Welsh. I only noticed the very faded "Croeso i Ddysgwyr" sign on the way out, but they certainly seemed welcoming enough.

In summary, worth a visit!

Did you tell them that you were an English tourist who'd learnt Welsh just to be polite on his holidays?...:D

Well, the great thing about this SSiW confidence is that I just feel I can launch into conversations now and not stress about it - so this time it didn't even occur to me to mention that. (Are you going to tell me off now for not plugging SSiW? )

"I can launch into conversations now and not stess about it...." That's the magical thing about this course, Peter.

Yes I hear it!... Hiraeth - the link with the long-forgotten past, the language of the soul, the call from the inner self. Half forgotten - fraction remembered. It speaks from the rocks, from the earth, from the trees and in the waves. It's always there.

No, not at all! I just want the meme to spread that some English people learn Welsh just because they come here on holiday...:)
