speaking Welsh on the spot

Well not so much a nervous encounter but more of a surprise.

In work yesterday a complete stranger initially spoke to me in Welsh.
My initial response was -"What!" :wow:

The woman then asked me in Welsh if I could speak Welsh and I managed to get my self together and respond in Welsh - yes of course but I am learning to speak Welsh. the conversation carried on in Welsh as to where we we from, that I should be able to speak Welsh from where I was from and me explaining that my father was a first language Welsh speaker, though my mother only spoke English and how disappointing that he didn't teach his children.

The fact that someone spoke to me in Welsh is not unique, this has happened a few times in my life but always I would say- ' oh I'm sorry I don't speak Welsh'. and that regret was always genuine.

Yesterday though I didn't have to say that and I felt that I really have achieved something!

Llongyfarchiadau! It would have been so easy for you to reply in English but you didn't. You've made a great leap forward with this conversation! :star:

It takes a while to get used to the idea you have the ability to answer questions in Welsh without thinking about it too much, but you're well on the way to being completely bilingual now! :llongyf:

Thanks SJ
I'm glad I didn't miss this opportunity that I have done so many times before. The difference was that I didn't have to think about it too much, that the Welsh came out probably not perfect by any standard but enough that she understood me and I understood her. She was kind enough not to pick up on my mistakes and let the conversation roll and it seemed the most natural thing to do!
Yes it was a bilingual moment so much so I forgot to speak English to the next person and she said to me 'oh I don't speak Welsh"! and I had to think about switching back to English!

So Aran I think it was a huge step forward and thanks for your comments but it thanks to you amazing people who brought this SSiW to me that made this possible!

That is so encouraging for the rest of us, just starting out on the SSIW journey. Thank you.

Tricia that's wonderful! Next time you'll be the one who starts in Cymraeg and other people will be catching you up! Ti'n dwyieithog nawr...you're bi-lingual now... :wow:
