New Inn Llanrwst

Postby RobertBruce » Mon Sep 14, 2009 9:39 am

I was in the beer garden of the New Inn in Llanrwst (what a town - there's pubs everywhere - the New Inn is one of three that are all next door to each other!) on Saturday afternoon for Gwyl Gwydir when a young man who had obviously taken quite a few cold drinks stumbled up to me and shouted something in my ear.

I didn't understand a single syllable, let alone any words. I put on a kind of 'can you repeat that?' face and said 'sori?', so he repeated what he had said. Again, I understood nothing at all. Embarrassed, I replied "Sori, dwi'm yn siarad Cymraeg yn dda iawn". He gave me a strange glance and went off to talk to someone else.

It was only a few minutes later that I realised that he had been speaking to me in somewhat slurred English!
No one ever drowned by getting out of their depth in a Welsh conversation.
