Another Welsh encounter in NSW...

Postby danhiggins1002 » Tue Feb 07, 2012 11:40 am

G'day pawb!

Had another Welsh in the wild experience last week, this time with me starting things off...

I was in Macquarie shopping centre, when a guy wearing a red shirt (with the dragon and 'Cymru' written on it) walked the other direction.

So I went through the whole mental thing in my head - "Ooh a Welsh person, I should probably ask if he speaks Welsh and see how it goes, but that could be weird just saying "helo!" to someone I don't even know-"

Then I bottled out as we walked past each other

So I thought to myself "Nevermind, we'll write that one off, I highly doubt I'll ever bump into the guy again, but if i do I WILL say something in Welsh to him!"

Then 5 minutes later I see the guy again - Time to swallow my words!

Me - "Bore da!"
Cymro - :-?
Me - "Um... Bore da..?"
Cymro " :-? ...
Me - "Wyt ti'n siarad Cymraeg?"
Cymro (in full-on Aussie twang) - "Nah mate."
Me - " Ah, sorry mate, my mistake, have a nice day!"
Cymro's wife -
Me - *walks away*

Superb work, Dan!...:D

And not only are you massively increasing your own chances of finding a Welsh speaker, you're also doing the best possible job of making other people think about the language...:)

Me - "Wyt ti'n siarad Cymraeg?"
Cymro (in full-on Aussie twang) - "Nah mate."
Me - " Ah, sorry mate, my mistake, have a nice day!"
Cymro's wife -

Focusing in:

Me - "Wyt ti'n siarad Cymraeg?"
Cymro (in full-on Aussie twang) - "Nah mate."

And, if you ask if he's asleep, will he answer, "yes"?

If he understood that you asked him, in Welsh, if he speaks Welsh, would he understand other Welsh??

Yeah, what Sionned said. "Are you asleep?" "Yes." = "Wyt ti'n siarad Cymraeg?" "No."

I suppose, to be fair, maybe he understands, but doesn't speak.

Yeah, I've been quietly hoping to read a 'Welsh in the wild' story from someone saying some strange curly haired guy randomly started speaking Welsh to them when they were out shopping.

Give him a couple of weeks to a) simmer down from the wife's ribbing, and b) find the course. Then, expect it under Introduce Yourself:

"So, me and the wife were out shopping, and it being rugby season and all, I had my shirt on, when this guy comes up from out of nowhere, and accosts us in Welsh..."
