First Welsh encounter!

Postby danhiggins1002 » Sun Dec 11, 2011 1:49 am

Had my first Welsh encounter yesterday in the strangest of places... In the middle of a road in Australia.
I was sitting at the traffic lights on my motorbike (adorned with a few Welsh flag stickers), when the bloke in the car next to me winds down his window and says "P'nawn da, Boyo!"

At this point I had a bit of a brain freeze as I thought to myself "Boyo? Sounds like he might be Welsh...wait a minute...P'hawn da actually IS Welsh! Quick, Say something!!"

I won't lie, I felt a bit on the spot, so I just about managed "Oh prynhawn da! Shwmae?"

"Da iawn, diolch. Ti?"

"Ydw, da iawn diolch."

Then the lights turned green, so I said "Da bor!" and rode off with a massive smile on my face!

WONDERFUL! That's exactly the way to do it. Sounds like a simply delightful experience.

Yeah it felt awesome, felt a bit worried about not being able to think of much apart from a greeting, but I'll forgive myself as I was sitting at traffic lights so it wasn't the best place to have a full-on chat. But yes it felt awesome

Superb story and a wonderful tribute to the sticker! I have a couple of furry dice hanging in the back window of my car and Dee gave me a sticker - must put that in another window. You've inspired me Dan, Cheers, Boyo!

Diolch a dim problwm Gary! I'm considering making a sticker to go under it saying "Wyt ti'n siarad Cymraeg?"

That's brilliant! And amazing bit of mental gear changing to find words under pressure of traffic lights and utterly unexpected conversation start!

I have trouble changing language gears even when I know it's going to happen!
