Dw i ddim yn siarad Cymraeg yn dda iawn...

Today's the second day of a 3 day international conference on translation out here in Malaysia at a town called Shah Alam near the capital Kuala Lumpur. The office practically twisted my arm to go... :-|

Bumped into a bloke who was a mine of information about languages. From his accent I thought he was English. So when we got on to the subject of languages spoken, I mentioned I spoke a bit of Welsh. Suddenly he blurted out a mass of sentences in clear, fluent, unbroken Welsh! Quickly the brain searched for that wonderful life-saving sentence from bonus lesson 6: "Dw i ddim yn siarad Cymraeg yn dda iawn". Turned out he was from South Wales but living in Eire. Well, he slowed down to let me practise my limited Welsh with him and I was quite pleased when he said "What you speak is very northern!" He used as few terms I didn't recognise but he explained them to me and said they were common in South Wales.

It was great to be chucked in at the deep end in having this first ever encounter with a real, live Welsh speaker, regardless whether it was in northern or southern. After all, it's all Welsh to me! :D

Outstanding! Is that the furthest flung 'unexpected Welsh conversation' we've had so far?!

Brilliant for you to be over that initial hurdle at such a pace - once you get the habit of practising your Welsh with people, it becomes hard to stop, and then suddenly you find out you're a Welsh speaker...:)
