A little chat by a river

Hello All

Just a quick note to say I was in Wales over the summer visiting family and had a great time. I was disappointed in the lack of Welsh I heard out and about (and this is in a very Welsh area) but I did manage to have an hour long chat with a random stranger I met on a very isolated road in the middle of nowhere on one of my walks. We spoke in Welsh and English, and he was an older chap whose English was not that great, and consistently dropped Welsh words in the middle of his sentences and mispronounced English words, so I knew I was dealing with the Real Deal!

The look on his face when I started speaking Welsh was priceless, and we nattered for a long time on a beautiful morning in the countryside. It was a wonderful experience being able to use so much Welsh, but there was some difficulty with his pronunciation because he was dropping Hs and contracting words like there was no tomorrow. It was lovely to see Wales (and England) again after so many years. A great experience, and thanks again to Aran, Catrin, Iestyn and Cat for their help, and kindest regards to all on the course!

B.

I'm sure your new friend has told everyone he knows and a few he doesn't about the amazing day he met a Welsh speaking Australian! :D

Well done you and glad you enjoyed your holiday :star:

Thanks everyone - for anyone worrying about "first contact" I would say just start talking in Welsh straight off the bat. It worked for me - I even learnt about the wildlife of the region and the location of a pub I never knew about :D
